The British Aerospace (BAe) P.1216 supersonic advanced short take-off/vertical landing (ASTOVL) multi-role fighter is yet another great might-have-been of Britain’s aviation industry. The P.1216, designed by the same team that developed the Harrier and Sea Harrier, could have taken the place of the Eurofighter Typhoon and the Lockheed F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter in the air arms of the world.
A large amount of work went into the project over many years, supported by the RAF and Royal Navy who wanted to develop an ASTOVL fighter, and in 1982 Margaret Thatcher viewed the mock-up at BAe Kingston. However, wider political issues intervened and the project was to remain largely secret, until now.

Michael Pryce has spent many years researching British vertical take-off aircraft, and in this book he examines the origins of the P.1216, the quest for supersonic STOVL, including competing designs, and the technologies that underlie ASTOVL aircraft. Using unprecedented access to previously secret documents, and interviews with key personnel involved in the P.1216 project, Mike has produced the first in-depth account of this advanced combat aircraft project.
